AFB has identified two primary areas of policy advocacy for the 2023 calendar year that have a transformative impact on access to employment, education, and community living. Supported by an active research agenda, AFB works independently and in coalition to identify and create opportunities for change that remove barriers and expand the possibilities for people who are blind or have low vision. Throughout the year, we may supplement our priority advocacy activities with support for other policies that align with our mission.

AFB is advocating for full digital inclusion.

  • We will advocate for the Websites and Software Applications Accessibility Act and the Communications and Video Accessibility Amendments Act – two pieces of legislation that expand access to websites, applications, video programming, and video conferencing.
  • We will advocate for web and application accessibility regulations issued under Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • We will oppose any legislation that would weaken ADA requirements for physical and digital accessibility.
  • We will continue to participate in the Disability Advisory Committee of the Federal Communications Commission.

AFB advocates for reliable, efficient, affordable, and accessible transportation options for people who are blind or have low vision.

  • We will advocate for autonomous vehicle standards and testing that creates a clear path to accessibility and safety for all people with disabilities.
  • We will support the rights of guide dog users to travel with the assistance of service animals.
  • We will follow federal implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and advocate for the access needs of people who are blind or have low vision.
