WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 26, 2018)—The US House of Representatives just passed the Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act (S. 2559), a historic agreement that will facilitate access to reading materials in a specialized format for eligible individuals, including and especially individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The implementing legislation now goes to the President’s desk for his signature.
The American Foundation for the Blind believes that access to books is a basic human right, the denial of which should not and cannot be tolerated by civilized countries in the twenty-first century. This historic Treaty will make available an additional 350,000 accessible books for people living in the United States.
We join our colleagues at The American Council of the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind, and the many groups and individuals who have worked tirelessly to reach this historic achievement in celebrating this major step forward.
