A Global Warrior

Helen Keller and Polly Thomson at the Hiroshima Tower, Japan, 1948

"I believe that the welfare of each is bound up in the welfare of all"

Keller traveled to 39 countries around the globe advocating for those with vision loss. In 1948 she visited Japan as a Goodwill Ambassador following the devastation caused by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Her trip was sponsored in part by the U.S. Army under General Douglas MacArthur. Up to two million people lined the streets and came to hear her speak, and she remains a beloved figure in Japan. The archive contains many extraordinary items from her travels including correspondence, photograph albums, film footage, and beautiful artifacts. Keller’s archival collection is a gateway to understanding her singular determination to fight for those with vision loss and the disenfranchised everywhere. Please help us digitize these priceless historical materials.
