AFB’s 8-day fundraiser begins today. Every dollar we raise will be matched by the National Endowment for the Humanities. For a short time only, your gift of $10 will be worth $20, $25 will bring in $50 — you get the idea! But we need to raise this money by next Wednesday, September 30th. Donate now and donate generously. And don’t forget to follow the campaign’s progress on Facebook.

In the Beginning...

Helen Keller's early handwritten words, 1887"

"What induces a child to learn but his delight in knowing?"

The words that you see here were written by Helen Keller on June 21st 1887 — she was a few days shy of 7 years of age and she was deaf and blind. Anne Sullivan, a 21-year-old graduate from the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts, had arrived in Tuscumbia, Alabama only 3 ½ months earlier to teach her young pupil. Within a breathtakingly short time, Helen, who had been unable to communicate with the world around her, learned to use the manual sign language, to read, and to write.

Helen, the lucky recipient of a wonderful early education, became a powerful advocate for education and in particular the education of young women. Please donate to this important fundraiser so that the next generation of children can have access to her extraordinary archive and can also be inspired by her life.
