White Cane Day is October 15! Every year since it was first established in 1964, this day has been set aside to celebrate the white cane as a symbol of independence and mobility for people who are blind or visually impaired.
In honor of White Cane Day, the American Foundation for the Blind is celebrating across its entire family of sites:
- The AFB Directory of Services can connect you to agencies around the country that offer orientation and mobility training—the use of systematic techniques to get around safely and efficiently after vision loss.
- FamilyConnect tackles the tough issue of what to do when your visually impaired child refuses to use the cane, and the joy of learning to love the independence it provides.
- CareerConnect looks back on some of its favorite posts about the powerful impact of the white cane for job seekers who are blind or visually impaired, and reminds drivers what to do when a blind pedestrian is crossing the street.
- VisionAware explores the impact that new colored canes may have on drivers' behavior, and has information to help you decide what type of cane is best for you.
- AFB eLearning recently released O&M for Independent Living: Fostering Collaboration with Service Providers, the first in a series of webinars focused on orientation and mobility strategies for older adults with visual impairments.
- And if you're in the Dallas area, we hope you joined the AFB Center on Vision Loss in their White Cane Day celebration!
Wherever you are, we wish you a safe, happy, and independent White Cane Day!
