This summer, the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB) will feature the final publication by a giant in the research of neuroplasticity of the brain and how it relates to vision. Dr. James E. Jan, founder, retired professor, and senior research scientist emeritus of the Visual Impairment Program at BC Children's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, is best known for his groundbreaking work that contributed enormously to the field's discussion of the nature of cortical visual impairment.
The article, "Windows into the Visual Brain: New Discoveries About the Visual System, Its Functions, and Implications for Practitioners," which Dr. Jan cowrote with five other professionals, carefully and clearly describes recent significant progress that has been made in the understanding of the human visual system. To help ensure that vision rehabilitation practices are based on the most current scientific discoveries, the article also provides detailed descriptions of new neurological and ophthalmic developments that are summarized specifically for professionals in the field of visual impairment and blindness.
In corresponding with Dr. Diane Wormsley, editor in chief of JVIB, Dr. Jan indicated: "...you allowed me to finish after 50 years in medicine with an article that is related to vision with my favorite people as co-authors. What a gift! Thank you!" JVIB is grateful to Dr. Jan for selecting the journal for his final publication and for his prolific work, which has contributed so much to the field of visual impairment and blindness.
Dr. Jan's final article has been published as part of the July-August 2013 issue of JVIB and is available now at JVIB.org.
