I am pretty psyched to let you all know about a cool opportunity. I know some of you were involved in the past National Transition Network Forum work, and some of you were not. But I wanted to let you know that we will be having a section of the pre-conference at the 2014 AFB Leadership Conference focused on the National Transition Network.

For those who don't know what the National Transition Network is about, it was framed around sharing innovative programs and methods for the transition of students who are blind or visually impaired. It typically involved programs from schools for the blind or visually impaired.

We want to take this to a different level. We want to include the schools for the blind and vlsually impaired, and add the community rehabilitation providers and state vocational rehabilitation programs to the mix. I know when I first participated, I was working for a state agency.

  • Where: Brooklyn, NY, at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge
  • When: February 27, 2014
  • Time: 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, 1 PM to 5 PM

I want to invite all who are passionate and have innovative programs specific to the transition to employment and post-secondary education to join us at the AFB Leadership Conference. There will be a specific strand of the pre-conference devoted to us, one full day. The game plan is to have a morning of updates from programs; you can come and share. Or, you can come, listen, and get amazing ideas from programs around the United States. The morning will involve the short updates, limited by attendance, but my estimate is about five to ten minutes per update.

In the afternoon, we will have sessions, and for these session I am taking short informal proposals about specific innovative programs. These sessions will be 15 to 20 minutes depending on the number of submissions. I will review the proposals and select specific members from the past to help with this process. We will also have a 30-minute session on the issues you are facing, hosted by Lori Pollium and Dael Cohen.

If you are interested in attending the event, you can e-mail me at jstrechay@afb.net to let me know of your interest. You will also need to sign up for the AFB Leadership Conference Pre-Conference in Brooklyn, NY, on February 27, 2014.

But, if you cannot attend, I will also take snippets of information to post online about the different programs through the AFB website. I will highlight some of the innovative programs featured during the event.
